Phototherapy treatment: the experience of mothers

Abstract

PURPOUSE: the purpose of this study was to assess the perception of mothers and what information they receive about the treatment conducted with their children. METHODS: based on the assumptions of quantitative and qualitative research, the study was held in a maternity hospital in São Paulo State following the ethical concerns. The babies that were jaundiced and in phototherapy treatment (n = 26), were profiled and their notes were analyzed. Their mother were characterized and interviewed and the interviews recorded and transcribed. RESULTS: Most of the mothers considered the treatment bad or unaware phototherapy treatment performed with her baby but ended up accepting it. The mothers received information related to treatment, but these were not homogeneous for all mothers. CONCLUSION: It’s necessary to inform mothers about the disease and treatment and standardize the information offered to them. DESCRIPTORS: neonatal nursing, jaundice neonatal, phototherapy, new born
